Understanding Abdominal Cancer Basics

Abdominal cancer is characterized by an uncontrolled growth of cells anywhere between the lower chest and groin. Abnormal cells may affect any of several different abdominal organs, including the liver, pancreas, intestines, gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, or blood vessels. Within the single category of abdominal cancer there are actually several different types of cancers that might affect these organs. Because of the potentially complex nature of these diseases, patients in Phoenix pursuing abdominal cancer treatment should seek experienced providers to partner with.

Detecting Abdominal Cancer

Abdominal cancers, including stomach cancers, are often first detected when a patient goes to their doctor with several different problematic symptoms. Pain, bloating, and eating problems are among the most common first signs of these diseases but a series of tests are required to confirm any particular diagnosis. A physical exam will be conducted and your doctor will discuss your medical history; you may be asked questions about the history of cancer and other diseases in your family.

Patients may be referred to a gastroenterologist at a Phoenix cancer center for further testing and evaluation. This doctor specializes in the health of the digestive tract and stomach. Patients may be referred to other specialists if cancer affecting other abdominal organs is suspected

Treating Abdominal Cancer

Once a cancer diagnosis has been confirmed, patients must discuss their treatment plan with their cancer team. Treatment options can vary somewhat depending on what type of cancer has been diagnosed, what stage it is in, and other factors although in general patients can expect to encounter three particular types of treatment:

  • Targeted therapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgical chemotherapy

Patients may feel pressured to make decisions quickly, although it is important to take time exploring all the information available to them. Whether or not you have received a cancer diagnosis at this time, learning about the care options available will help you make informed choices about your treatment.
